Description
The archway to Coley Hall, dated 1649, is a gateway featuring a broad moulded elliptical arch. It has moulded imposts, joggled voussoirs, and a plinth surrounded by a string that forms a frame. This frame rises over the keystone, which is adorned with the date and a cross motif beneath a carved face, and it returns to create two shallow spandrels. The spandrels are intricately carved with dogs and traces of other animals. Above the archway is a raked cornice, which includes a pierced tympanum and finials. This structure is noted in L. Ambler's book, "The Old Halls and Manor Houses of Yorkshire," published in London in 1913, on page 33.
