Description

A late 15th-century timber-framed house and attached barn, located on Gate Road, Brighouse, were encased in stone, likely in the mid-18th century. A 17th-century stone cross-wing, originally present on the right-hand side, has since been removed (this listing is provisional). The barn is constructed with thin, hammer-dressed stone, while the house is rendered. The building follows a through-passage plan. A large hall window features a roughly carved hoodmould, and a main stack is situated against the through passage. Within the structure, remnants of the original open hall survive, including posts, curved braces, a king post truss, and mortices for a fire hood. The barn is a single-aisled construction with substantial timbering, exhibiting a heavy, jowled king post truss and retaining wall ties. The interior of the barn reveals a close-studded gable wall of the house, displaying posts and curved braces rising from stylobats. Despite the exterior's altered appearance, the building represents a significant surviving example of a late medieval timber-framed hall.
