Description

This is a terrace of workers' houses completed in 1857 as part of the Saltaire model village, designed by Lockwood and Mawson for Titus Salt. The houses are built of hammer-dressed stone with a Welsh slate roof. The terrace comprises numbers 23 to 44 Whitlam Street.

The terrace is two storeys high, with one bay per house, except for the end houses, which project forward and have two bays. The end houses feature a round-arched, archivolted doorway and window, indicating their greater architectural importance to the views from Caroline Street and Titus Street. The other houses each have a plain doorway and one window to each floor. A sill band runs along the front of the houses, below the first-floor windows. Some houses have had bathroom windows inserted. Wooden brackets support the guttering on the end houses. The roofs are hipped, and the end houses have two-bay return elevations.
