Description

23 Albert Terrace is a terrace of workers' houses, originally completed by 1854, designed by Lockwood and Mawson for Titus Salt. The buildings are constructed from hammer-dressed stone and feature a Welsh slate roof. Each house is two storeys high with one bay, and they all have a plain entrance and a single window on each floor. Some houses include an inserted bathroom window, and a few are rendered. The terrace has paired stone gutter brackets, and at each end, the single bay of the end houses features round-arched archivolted openings on the ground floor and square-headed openings with a sill band on the first floor. Notably, No 19 Caroline Street has an inserted door. The end houses are more architecturally detailed due to their significance to the streetscape of Caroline Street and Albert Terrace. The terrace includes a two-bay right return and a four-bay left return, with the left two bays (No 20 Caroline Street) set back slightly. This terrace is part of the Saltaire model village.
