Description
Trench Farmhouse is a house dating from the mid-17th century, with an addition that is initialled and dated "H" and "I E 1697". It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with rubble at the rear and features a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high and has a two-cell, double-depth L-shaped plan.
The symmetrical facade has five bays and includes rusticated quoins, a plinth, and a band. The doorway is flanked by pilasters with moulded capitals and features a stilted-arched lintel with a raised keystone and daisies carved in the spandrels. Above the doorway, there is an oval plaque with a date stone beneath a circular window. On either side of the door, there are cross-windows with slightly recessed flat-faced mullions set in a raised plain stone surround, which has a roll moulded edge that matches the door jambs. The gables are coped with kneelers and finely sculpted finials, and there are gable stacks with moulded cornices.
At the rear, there is a four-light double-chamfered mullioned-and-transomed window to the left of a cross-window at mezzanine level, likely to illuminate the original staircase. The kitchen wing projects forward on the right and has a blind coped gable with kneelers, finials, and a stack. The side walls feature a two-light window to the left and a five-light window with a four-light window above it to the right. The right-hand return wall of the main house has a three-light window on the first floor.
This house is notable for its departure from local vernacular traditions, incorporating classical elements in its front facade.
