Description

A large block of shops and offices built in 1871 by Knowles and Wilcock, encompassing numbers 9-15 Bridge Street, along with sections of Ivegate, Market Street, and Tyrrel Street. This island block presents different architectural styles to its various facades. The Tyrrel Street and Market Street elevations are in an Italianate and Venetian Gothic style, constructed from sandstone ashlar and closely fenestrated with detailed features. The Bridge Street and Ivegate facades are narrower, displaying a Gothic style with windows divided by polished granite colonettes to the first and second floors, the second floor windows incorporating pointed arches. Thin pilasters with foliate capitals separate the third-floor windows. The building features modillion bracket eaves cornices and a false machicollated cornice, topped with iron cresting along the Gothic front. The corners are canted, with the corner block facing Market Street incorporating architrave surrounds, cartouche consoles on the first floor, and a segmental pediment on the second floor. A dormer window on this corner features an ornate bull's eye design. The windows generally share similar detailing, but the front of number 9 is divided into two by a pilaster. Dormers at the corner are segmental capped with two lights. The block makes an important contribution to the architecture of the city centre.
