Description
No 47 Queensgate is part of a long block that includes Nos 2 to 18 Queensgate and Nos 39 to 49 on Bank Street. This building, designed by Lockwood and Mawson in 1876, features four storeys with ashlar elevations and restrained Italianate detailing. Architectural elements include string courses, sill courses, and a modillion bracketed eaves cornice. The corners are splayed, and there are quoin pilasters with grooving. The upper floor windows have architrave surrounds, with console bracketed pediments on the first floor and cornices on the second floor. The design includes shallow breaks with tripartite pedimented windows and a parapet adorned with crested plaques. The roofs are squat pyramidal and covered with slate, positioned behind the breaks. No 49 features a finely carved architrave doorway with scroll brackets supporting the pediment above. No 41, known as The Bradford Club, has a notable fluted Roman Doric columned doorway with a segmental pediment. The south end of No 39, facing Hustlergate, is canted, and the elevations of this block are similar along Queensgate.
