Description
Thorpe Buildings, located at 2 and 4 Tyrrel Street in Bradford, was constructed between 1871 and 1876 by architects Hope and Jardine. This building occupies a triangular site at the junction of Hustlergate and Ivygate and was one of the early department stores, originally housing George Thorpe and Co.
The structure is four stories high and features Italianate detailing in ashlar stone. It has a console bracket cornice and presents two or three window bays on each facade, with three window groups separated by engaged Composite columns on each floor. The ground floor has been altered and includes banking premises at the west corner, which is adorned with Roman Ionic columns and wreath-capped pilasters. The bank corner is splayed, showcasing a tripartite columned bow window on the first floor.
Doubled columns flank the tripartite windows on the first floor, and above the corner, there is an aedicula dormer with a segmental pediment, cresting, and flanking scrolls. Each front features columnar parapeted curved corniced dormers that alternate with tall, panelled corniced chimneys.
