Description
The Grosvenor Public House is a three-storey painted ashlar building located at Nos 1 and 3 Upper Millergate and No 43 Ivygate, dating from around 1840 to 1850. It features a sharply bowed corner facing Ivygate and exhibits late Regency architectural details. The facade has two bays on Ivygate and three on Upper Millergate, with horizontal grooving on the ground floor, which is enhanced by Doric pilasters and an entablature with a projecting cornice.
On the first floor, the windows alternate with niches topped by panels, and are framed by slender Ionic pilasters that rise from pedestals with moulded capping, which also serves as a sill course. A deep entablature runs above the first floor. The attic storey includes rectangular windows set in raised surrounds, which are also framed by Tuscan pilasters. The building is topped with a cornice and blocking course, which is further adorned with corniced ashlar chimneys. This public house occupies an important corner site.
