Description
The Halifax Building Society, located at 28 Bank Street, is a Grade II listed building, likely designed by Andrews and Pepper around 1870-1880. This four-storey office building is constructed of ashlar gritstone and features early Italian Renaissance details.
The ground floor and first or mezzanine floor are flanked by pilasters with foliate caps and are topped with a deep entablature. There are weathered sill courses and a frieze, along with a drip mould and a projecting eaves course supported by paired console brackets. The ground floor has two modernised windows on either side of a three-centred arched doorway, which is adorned with carved spandrels.
The first or mezzanine floor features windows with paired arched lights separated by pilasters and foliate carved impost strings. The second floor is particularly striking, showcasing three large archivolt arched window openings that are framed by slender two-bay arcades, with foliate capped dividing colonettes and circles linked above in the open tympani, as well as undercut foliate details in the post string. The third floor has raised, two-light, arcaded windows with dividing pilasters, and a bed mould runs below the frieze, which is topped with a moulded eaves cornice flanked by paired carved console brackets. The building also includes No 6 Piece Hall Yard.
