Description
This listing describes two pairs of gate piers and linking garden walls with a summer-house attached to the rear of Farfield Hall, dating from the early 18th century. The structures are made of ashlar and coursed rubble walls. The gate piers to the east are particularly impressive, being tall and featuring Roman Doric pilasters with a full entablature on each face, along with rusticated corner strips at the angles. These piers are topped with finely sculpted urns. The gate piers to the west are square in plan and have a cornice topped with an obelisk.
The linking walls, which enclose the garden on three sides, have chamfered copings that ramp down to the south. The garden is interrupted by a stone summer-house, which has a monopitched roof with half-coped gables and kneelers. The summer-house features a semicircular-arched doorway with rusticated voussoirs and quoins. In the north wall, there is another doorway with a semicircular arch, a keystone, and a cyma-moulded surround. This doorway includes a wooden doorcase with an open-spoked fan-light, turned balusters, and an eight-panelled door.
