Description
This is a pair of cottages, or four back-to-back dwellings, with later additions to form workshops. The building dates from the early to mid-19th century, constructed in two phases. It is built of coursed squared stone with a stone slate roof. The building is two and four storeys high, with five bays facing the road.
The original three bays on the right-hand side are set back from the road. They have two-light mullion windows on each floor of each bay, except for a single-light window in the centre of the ground floor, which occupies a wider opening. The original mullions have been removed from the first floor windows. Stone gutter brackets are present, and the right gable, which abuts number 25 Thackley Road, has a raised verge, coping, and chimney stacks on the ridge and front roof slope. The two right bays have been heightened and extended forward, using thinner coursed stone above the first floor level. A wide doorway with a monolithic lintel and a 20th-century garage door are on the left side. To the right, there is a window and a board door set in a stone surround with tie stones. Above, there are two two-light windows to each floor, with the exception of a single-light window on the first floor, right, which sits over a blocked window or former doorway. Gutter brackets are consistent with those on the earlier section. Ashlar coping is present.
At the rear, a plinth is visible. The ground floor features a window, a door, a window, a door, and a window, and above there are five windows. All have stone lintels and projecting cills. The doors have been converted to windows. Paired gutter brackets are present, along with coping. A four-storey section rises behind the rear of the building on the right and projects, forming an acute angle with the recessed entrance. The left return of the building shows the four-storey section with two-light windows to the first and second floors and a single-light window to the gable.
