Description
The building is an L-shaped block that serves as a stable, coach house, and barn, enclosing the court to the north of the hall at Royds Hall. It is dated 1663 and 1686, with some late 18th century and early 19th century alterations. This impressive two-storey structure is built from coursed gritstone and sandstone brick, topped with hipped stone slate roofs that feature bracketed eaves.
The north elevation facing the court includes a doorway with a chamfered shaped head dated 1663, four circular ashlar-framed windows on the first floor, and three light chamfered mullion windows on the ground floor. There is another doorway to the left corner, dated 1686. The north front facing the road has two light chamfered mullion windows on the ground floor and pairs of round-headed lights on the first floor. Inside the coach house, there is a double-braced crown post roof structure from the mid to late 18th century. The south return range features square mullion windows and a pentice at the south end, which has an external flight of steps leading to a small service court.
