Description

The Thornton Railway Viaduct, built around 1876-78, is a striking structure made of sandstone "brick." It features 20 semi-circular arches that rest on slender, tapering piers, which support the former single track line. The viaduct has very thin ashlar strings that cap the piers at the spring of the arches and a flat band located below the parapet. The contractors for the line were Benton and Woodiwise. This viaduct significantly enhances the landscape of the valley below Thornton.
