Description

This is a terrace of ten small houses, numbered 5 to 19, located on Salem Street and dating from around 1840 to 1850. The terrace steps down the hillside. Numbers 15 to 19 are faced in roughcast, while the others are constructed from sandstone "brick." All have stone slate roofs and corniced chimneys. The houses have projecting ashlar eaves cornices with two windows each, and revealed glazing bar sash windows with painted flat arches. Pilastered doorways are present, and an entablature is carved above the carriageway between numbers 7 and 15. The rear elevations feature round-headed windows with glazing bar star lights.

A rear wing to the west of the yard was formerly a coach house and stables, possibly including former livery stables, and extends to four storeys. The coach house section has a stone slate roof with small modillion brackets to the eaves. The ground floor features six segmental arched coach house doors with grooved voussoir detailing, divided by rusticated piers. Sill courses are present on the first and second floors, and there are eleven windows to the upper floors, the majority with glazing bar sashes, with four being blind on the second floor. Numbers 9 and 11 were originally a coach house wing to the rear.
