Description
Old Harden Grange is a house dating from the early to mid-17th century. It is constructed from large coarsed gritstone and features a stone slate roof. The building is L-shaped and has two storeys, with a two-cell block to the left of the entrance bay.
The windows throughout the structure are double-chamfered mullioned windows, with hoodmoulds over the ground-floor windows. The first cell has three-light windows that have been altered to two-lights, with two-lights above. The second cell features a six-light window with a king mullion that has been changed to four-wide lights, with three-lights above. A two-light window on the first floor is partly obscured by the entrance bay, which is at right angles to the main structure.
The doorway has a Tudor-arched lintel and is flanked by Doric columns, topped with an entablature and cornice. Above the entrance is a much-weathered heraldic shield. The lintel bears an inscription, which is also much weathered, that reads:
"If thou a house shalt finde Built to thy mynde And that without thy cost Serve thou the more God and the poore And then thy labour is not loste."
The building has coped gables with kneelers, and there are stacks, including one on the left gable of the first cell and another on the gable of the entrance wing. Attached to the left-hand return wall is a short wall with a doorway set into it, featuring a cyma-moulded surround and a lintel dated 1701. This doorway forms a link to The Cottage.
