Description

The wall attached to the south front of The Cottage at Old Harden Grange is a Grade II listed structure, dating from the early 18th century, with some later 18th century or early 19th century elements. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings. The wall that connects to The Cottage features a semicircular-arched doorway with a cyma-moulded surround, located to the left of a recessed date stone. This date stone is inscribed with the words: "THIS MADE: WILL I AM FARRAND AND ELIZABETH HIS. WIFE . . I III APRIL: 1584..." in raised lettering, and the wall is coped at the top.

At a right angle to this wall is an open arcade consisting of four pointed arches, with smaller arches set in the spandrels, each topped with a stone cross. The date stone may have been relocated from Carlton Hall in Skipton, which was built by William and Elizabeth Ferrand in 1584, and incorporated into the garden wall at a later time.
