Description

Nos 24, 26, 28, and 30 Northgate are a pair of cottages that have been combined into a single dwelling and shop, attached to another house divided into two occupations (Nos 28 and 30). These buildings date from the late 18th century and have undergone alterations in the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. They are constructed from hammer-dressed stone with dressed quoins, and the front is rendered, featuring stone slate roofs.

The structure is two storeys high and has a T-shaped layout with the cottages on the left. There are four windows on the first floor. The paired doorways have a chamfered surround and are set within an open wooden gabled porch. On either side of the doorways are altered shop windows, while the first floor features two-light flat-faced mullioned windows with recessed mullions and 4-paned sashes. Above the doors, there are two single-light windows. The building has gable stacks, and the right gable has been extended to include a doorway on the ground floor (No 28) with a single-light window above. No 30 projects forward and has altered window arrangements in the gable facing the street, along with a single stack on the ridge.

At the rear, Nos 24 and 26 have an outshut and a two-storey wing that is set at right angles. The rear of No 30 features two and three-light flat-faced mullioned windows on the first floor. Inside Nos 24 and 26, there are stop-chamfered spine beams, while No 30 has a panelled wall with small oak square panels that are painted, likely not in their original position.
