Description

The Malt Shovel Public House is a late 17th century or early 18th century building that has undergone mid-20th century alterations. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone with dressed quoins and features a stone slate roof. The structure is 2½ storeys tall and has a two-cell gable-entry plan that is double-depth. The gable end facing the street has the left half protruding forward, while the right half includes a wide external stack with a quoined angle and offsets. In the angle between these sections is a Tudor-arched doorway with sunken spandrels, which is blocked, and an oval window with leaded lights above it. At the attic level, there is a 2-light double-chamfered mullioned window to the right of the stack. The gable is coped with kneelers and features an L-shaped stack with five chimney pots. The rear gable is also coped with kneelers and has a stack. The right-hand return wall has two inserted mid-20th century flat-roofed bay windows, with a mullioned window set between them. On the first floor, there is a former 6-light double-chamfered mullioned window that is partly blocked, along with a 4-light window that is missing two mullions.

Inside, two rooms feature stop-chamfered spine beams and floor joists. One room has a large fireplace with a segmental arch and a stop-chamfered surround, while the other room contains a fireplace with an 18th-century character, featuring monolithic jambs and a lintel supported by corbels with a moulded surround. The building is prominently located in the town.
