Description

This is a terrace of 25 houses, numbers 51 to 75, dating from around 1840 to 1850, and forming the north side of Southfield Square. Building on the site is thought to have continued until about 1860. Houses 51 to 56 are similar in style to the properties on the opposite side of the square, but have doorways with pilasters. Number 57 is double-fronted, with three windows, and has paired sash windows set in ashlar surrounds. It features an architrave doorcase with large console brackets supporting a cornice. Numbers 59 and 61 also have pilastered doorways, decorated with acanthus leaf mouldings on the neckings. Numbers 62 to 67 have pilastered doorways and two windows on the first floor, with tripartite windows on the ground floor. Numbers 68 to 70 are similar, but the doorways have archivolt arches, impost blocks, and large, carved console brackets supporting the cornices. The eaves cornices of these three houses are embellished with modillion brackets. Numbers 71 to 75 return to the more common pilastered doorway style. The properties are included in the listing for their contribution to the group value of the square.
