Description
The chimney stack of the former Clayton Fireclay Works, located approximately 56 yards south-west of The Towers, dates from around 1890. It is a tall, tapering structure with a square section and is the only surviving part of the fireclay works complex. Built by Julius Whitehead's son, the chimney features dark red bricks and three deep bands of enamelled bricks, which include white and green brick diamond pattern panels. The uppermost band is decorated on each face with an urn pattern, and there is a white and blue block frieze below the cornice capping.
