Description
Ceramic House is a lodge built around 1880-1890 for the Towers and part of the Whitehead family's Clayton Fireclay Works estate. Like the Tower itself, the lodge serves as a showcase for the firm's products. It is situated on a raised terrace with a cast iron balustrade featuring a French-inspired design. The two-storey elevations are constructed from salt glazed fireclay bricks that are a bull's blood red color, adorned with white and blue enamelled birds arranged in diamond patterns. There are leaf patterned fireclay plat bands and eaves bands. The roof has a low pitch and is tiled at the gable end. The front has four windows divided into two sections, with the left side recessed. The ground floor features coupled sash windows. The lintels are embellished with fireclay plaques depicting amorini, and there are similarly decorated circular plaques at the corners of the window heads.
