Description
The Town Hall, which includes a public library, was built between 1906 and 1908 by W. Bakewell. It features a mixed architectural style, primarily influenced by Franco-Flemish classical design. The building has a tripartite central section that is recessed behind flanking blocks and stands two storeys tall. It is constructed of ashlar stone and has mainly mullioned windows, topped with steep, hipped slate roofs, giving it an almost symmetrical appearance.
The central section's mid part includes an entrance that is recessed and framed by Ionic columns and a pediment, with a transomed window on either side. The upper storey features a three-light oriel window, flanked by windows with four lights that are divided by miniature piers, and there is a cartouche in a recessed panel above. The roof above this section is pyramidical, and a clock turret with a louvred upper stage is positioned at the central ridge.
On either side of the central part, there are three-storey turrets capped with lead ogee roofs, and beyond these turrets are single bays with thermal windows below and oriels that slightly project above. The right-hand projecting end block is slightly wider than the left and features a recessed central doorway. Both end blocks have a three-light pair of flanking windows below, and above these, there is a large three-light window that rises through a moulded cornice, forming lunettes under moulded arches. These are flanked by a pair of full-length carved figures and a pair of roundels beyond. The roofs of the building are tripartite, with a central pyramidical section crowned by a tall finial.
