Description
Stock-a-Close Farmhouse is a house dating from the mid 17th century. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with dressed quoins and has a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high and features a two-cell, gable-entry plan that is double-depth. The layout is L-shaped, with the left cell projecting under a cat-slide roof.
The farmhouse has double-chamfered mullioned windows, with those on the ground floor featuring hoodmoulds. The first cell includes a 5-light window with a 4-light window above it, while the second cell, which is set back, has a 5-light window with a 4-light window above and a 2-light fire-window with a small chamfered light above it (which is blocked). The gables are coped and include kneelers and stacks.
The rear of the farmhouse was originally single-storey but was raised to two storeys in the early 18th century, during which time the windows were altered. This section has two bays of windows, with the ground floor featuring double-framed windows with square reveals of 2 lights and recessed flat-faced mullions. The first floor has two 3-light flat-faced mullioned windows, with the mullions slightly recessed.
On the right-hand return, there is a mid-20th century porch that protects the door entry, with a blocked 3-light chamfered mullioned window above it. At the apex of the building, there is a carved stone featuring the double-cross of the Knights Templars.
