Description

The Manor House, at numbers 8 and 10 Victoria Street, is a house built in the late 16th or early 17th century. It is constructed of large dressed stone with a stone slate roof. The building has a two-cell plan, with a central baffle entry and a single-cell wing extending from the rear of the second cell. The architectural detailing is of a very high quality. The windows are double-chamfered, mullioned, and transomed, with cyma-moulded mullions and transoms. The first-floor windows feature king mullions and arched lights with sunken spandrels. The first cell has an early 18th-century doorway with monolithic jambs and a chamfered surround that rises to form a false ogee lintel. Above this doorway is a six-light mullioned-and-transomed window, with a five-light window above it. The second cell features a doorway with composite jambs and a Tudor-arched lintel with spandrels and a richly moulded surround including roll, step and cyma mouldings. A corresponding eight-light mullioned-and-transomed window sits above, accompanied by a six-light window. A continuous hoodmould runs over the ground-floor windows. The left-hand gable has a coped detail with kneelers and a finial at the apex. There are two rendered chimney stacks: one central on the ridge, and another to the right gable.

Inside the original house body, there are spine beams and floor joists with cyma-moulded stops. A large fireplace has a rectangular lintel with a broad, chamfered surround. An oak-panelled entry lobby and several panelled doors are also present.
