Description
Greenhill Grange is a house with an attached cottage, dating from the late 17th century, with some earlier features inside. It was altered in the mid-18th century when the cottage was added. The building is constructed from hammer-dressed stone with dressed quoins and has a stone slate roof. It is two storeys high and has a two-cell baffle-entry plan.
The house has two bays of windows; the ground floor windows have double-chamfered surrounds and were originally five lights with lowered sills and one central mullion. The first-floor windows have plain stone surrounds and modern glazing. A lean-to porch covers the original doorway, which features a Tudor-arched lintel and chamfered jambs, with a small single-light window above. The gables are coped with kneelers and stacks. On the left-hand return wall, there is a carved double-cross of the Knights Templars set in the apex of the gable.
Inside, the house has stop-chamfered, scarf-jointed spine beams, and there is evidence of a former bressumer and fire-hood, which has been replaced by a later segmental-arched fireplace with a cyma-moulded surround. The parlour features an ogee stop-chamfered spine beam morticed into the bressumer. There is also a section of oak panelling, possibly part of the original heck-screen, which is initialled and dated "R F . A F 1634," associated with the Ferrands family.
