Description

The Midland Bank, located at 17 Church Street in Sheffield, is a bank building constructed in 1838, with expansions and alterations made around 1878, and further changes in the late 20th century. Designed by Samuel Worth for the Sheffield & Hallamshire Bank, the building is made of ashlar stone and features a Neo-Classical style. It stands two storeys tall and has a façade with a range of nine windows plus two additional ones.

The main block on the right side showcases a plinth, fluted giant Ionic columns, and panelled pilasters, topped with a cornice and a set-back balustrade that includes three raised panelled dies, the central one adorned with a carved crest. The building has nine plain sash windows above and seven plain sash windows below, each with a cast-iron lattice beneath. At either end of the façade, there are square-headed doorways, each with a relief-carved panel above, and the smaller right door features a cast-iron grille above it.

To the left, an addition includes two plain sash windows under a segmental pediment, framed by panelled pilasters and topped with a cornice. Below this, there is a round-arched carriage entrance with a keystone, flanked by strapwork pilasters topped with terms. The entrance is completed with cast-iron lattice work double gates and a fanlight grille.

Inside, the banking hall is characterized by Corinthian pilasters and an enriched coved ceiling, with a late 20th-century opening in the back wall.
