Description

The West Portal to Bridgehouses Railway Tunnel is a tunnel portal built in 1847 by Frederick Swanwick for the Midland Railway Company. It is constructed from ashlar and coursed squared stone. The design features a semicircular archway with double roll moulding, flanked by slightly projecting rusticated pylons. These pylons are topped with a roll moulded cornice and blocking. To the right of the portal, there is a short curved retaining wall with slab coping, along with a square end pier that has a roll moulded cornice and a flat cap. This structure is an early example of monumental railway architecture.
