Description

The Little Matlock Rolling Mill is a Grade II* listed steel rolling mill, built in 1882 on the foundations of an earlier structure that was rebuilt after a flood in 1864. The building is constructed from coursed, squared gritstone and features a slate roof. It is a large rectangular structure that includes later brick extensions. The end gable has projecting quoins and a round-headed window with a keystone, which is now obscured by a lean-to roof. A central date plaque is located above a band.

On the right side of the building, there are three sets of paired windows with square-faced surrounds and projecting sills, most of which are unglazed. To the right, there is a large, immobile overshot water wheel with eight cast-iron spokes on each side and 42 buckets. Above the wheel, there is a sectional cast-iron pentrough supported by a cast-iron stanchion. The adjacent wall has a blocked opening with a shouldered lintel that once provided access to the wheel from inside the works. The wheel was in use until around 1956, and both the dam and tail-race are still present.

Inside, there is a massive flywheel that is now powered by an electric motor, and a 19th-century four-stand in-line rolling mill that is still operational. The water wheel is noted as the largest example of its type still surviving in Sheffield.
