Description
Loxley United Reformed Church is a church built in 1787. It is constructed from coursed, squared gritstone and features a Welsh slate roof with a central flat lead section. The church has a symmetrical plan, consisting of two storeys and five by five bays. It has a plinth and a central blocked doorway, which has been converted into a window. This doorway features plinth blocks, monolithic jambs with a moulded panel, and a moulded round-arched head made of two stones, each adorned with a decorative roundel and a cornice.
The windows in the flanking bays are set in square-faced surrounds. There is a band at the first floor level, with a sill band above that connects to a central, corniced Venetian window, flanked by square-faced windows on either side. Most of the windows have casements with glazing bars, which are mostly original, except for the second bay on the ground floor and the infilled doorway window, both of which have stained-glass panels. The church features a coved eaves course.
On the left side of the building, there are doors with fanlights in round-headed ashlar surrounds at bays two and four. There is also a central tripartite window with a stained glass panel. The right side has a later flat-roofed extension that encloses the original board door. On the first floor, there is a large Venetian window with doubled outer lights, although the outermost lights are blocked. Flanking square-faced windows are present on each floor.
Inside, the church has a gallery on three sides supported by decorative iron columns. Bay five contains a large vestibule beneath the first-floor meeting room. There is a small gabled extension at the rear left, which is not considered of special interest.
