Description
The Trustee Savings Bank, located at 635 Queen's Road in Sheffield, is a bank building constructed in 1900 for the Sheffield Savings Bank (Heeley Branch). It is designed in the Baroque Revival style and features ashlar stonework with hipped slate and lead roofs.
The exterior includes a plinth, sill band, main cornice, and a balustrade with pedestals topped with urns. A frieze inscribed "Sheffield Savings Bank" adorns the facade. The building is two storeys high and has a square plan with a corner entrance. The rounded corner entrance bay features a ramped coped parapet that contains a clock. On the first floor, there are two round-arched windows with keystones. Below these, the entrance is framed by a doorcase with flanking Doric columns and a curved entablature, which has the frieze inscribed "Heeley Branch." The entrance consists of panelled double doors with an overlight.
The left return facing London Road has two tall round-arched glazing bar windows with shaped keystones, alternating with partly fluted Ionic pilasters. The right return has two similar windows, and to the right, there is an entrance bay with two round-arched windows above and a flat-headed doorway below. This doorway features a panelled door and overlight to the right, along with a small window below, all under a foliage frieze.
Inside, the bank features a coffered ceiling with a panelled cornice. The dado and wall tiling reach three-quarters of the height and are made of moulded glazed tiles with floral designs in green and yellow. There is an angled internal wooden porch with tiled walls, a cornice, and half-glazed double doors with round-headed overlights. A full-width wooden counter with Classical detailing includes a half-glazed door at each end, with the one on the right being altered. Behind the counter, there are three panelled doorcases with entablatures and a canted glazed office enclosure with a cornice.
