Description

Lowfield Junior and Infant School, facing Queens Road, is a junior and infant school built in 1877, with additions in 1878 and 20th-century alterations. It was designed by Innocent & Brown for the Sheffield School Board. The building features rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and has gabled and hipped slate roofs, including two ridge stacks with double lozenge-shaped flues linked by ventilators, all in the Gothic Revival style.

The school has a plinth, coped gables, and gabled roof ventilators. It is a single-storey structure with a seventeen-window range. The off-centre main gable has a pointed arched recess that contains a graduated triple lancet. To the left, there is a range with four shouldered windows. To the right, a range features three gabled through-eaves dormers with shouldered single lights, along with two two-light shouldered windows with mullions. Further to the right, there is a hipped wing in an L-plan, which has seven lancets with an impost band. In the return angle to the left, there is a pointed arched doorway.

The interior has not been inspected. This school is one of several designed by Innocent & Brown for the Sheffield School Board and is among the earliest built following the 1870 Education Act.
