Description
The roadside wall facing the main range of the Vickers Building at the River Don Works in Sheffield is an early 20th-century structure with late 20th-century alterations on the far side. Built for Vickers, Son & Co., the wall is constructed of brick in English Garden Wall bond, featuring stone dressings. It consists of a tall single-storey range with 8 bays, and to the right, a lower single-storey range with 4 bays that was originally longer. The wall has a plinth, pilasters, and a parapet, which define full-height recesses with rebated and cogged heads. The 8-bay range includes a tall round-arched opening in each bay, although all but the heads have been bricked up. The 4-bay range features tall multipane windows with segmental heads. Together with the Vickers Building opposite, this wall exemplifies a "canyon" development, where tall steelworks lined the streets, a typical architectural feature in Sheffield. The wall is included for its group value.
