Description

The Carbrook Hall Public House, formerly known as No.537 Ye Old Carbrook Hall Hotel, is a house dating back to approximately 1620, with alterations from the 18th century, the mid-19th century, and the mid-20th century. It is constructed of rendered and colourwashed material, with some squared dressed stone exposed at the rear, stone dressings, and has a hipped slate roof. The building includes paired ashlar ridge stacks and a truncated rendered external rear wall stack.

The exterior features a chamfered plinth, a moulded first floor band, and eaves. The north-east front has two glazing bar sashes, a central blank space, and two 20th-century windows, all with chamfered stone surrounds. A centrally positioned, gabled 19th-century porch with a Tudor arched doorway is flanked to the right by a three-light stone mullioned window and to the left by a larger 19th-century triple sash with stone mullions. To the left of this is a small late 19th-century door and a blocked three-light mullioned window. The left end has two stone cross mullioned windows on each floor, the upper ones being blocked. The rear features a recessed three-bay link connecting the 17th-century range to 19th and 20th-century additions. The 17th-century range to the right has two stone cross mullioned windows on each floor, a central three 2-light mullioned windows, and below a 19th-century triple sash. A projecting chimney breast with a three-light mullioned window is flanked to the left by a 20th-century lean-to addition.

Inside, on the south side, is a ground floor room dating from the 17th century, featuring a vine trail plaster frieze and an enriched cross beam ceiling, also with a vine trail motif. A particularly elaborate early 17th-century oak chimneypiece is present, featuring Corinthian columns and allegorical figures, with a Latin inscription to the overmantel. The room above this has framed panelling with painted decoration and a larger stone chimneypiece with a corniced mantelshelf and overmantel flanked by unusual caryatids. A door with shaped fielded panels and three late 18th-century panelled doors are also present.

Carbrook Hall was the home of the Blunt family from the 12th century, and from the late 16th century belonged to the Bright family, lords of the manor of Eccleshall. John Bright was involved in activities during the English Civil War, and the building served as a Parliamentarian meeting place during the siege of Sheffield Castle.
