Description

The boundary wall at the entrance to Davy Offshore Modules Ltd. was built around 1887 and is located on the north side of Vulcan Street in Middlesbrough. Constructed of brick in English bond with stone dressings, the wall serves as a screen and varies in height from 4.5 meters at the right end to 9 meters at the left end. It features a design with 1 + 5 + 4 + 4 bays.

The left end bay has a shallow gable and includes three blind round-headed doorways, with the middle one being taller, all framed in flat brick surrounds with rounded edges. Above these doorways is a central oculus, also in a similar surround. The wall is accented with pilaster strips that have rounded angles at the ends, topped with slightly projecting pedestals that have gabled caps. The gable itself contains 13 recessed panels and has chamfered copings.

The right five bays feature large elliptical-headed openings, also framed in similar surrounds, which hold iron grilles. There are additional pilaster strips to the right of the third and sixth bays, with the sixth bay topped by a similar pedestal. The wall has stone-capped chamfered plinths and a parapet with flat copings. The four lower bays on the right end have smaller openings but maintain a similar design, with large recessed panels featuring dogtooth heads, a parapet with chamfered copings that are ramped at the ends, and a similar pedestal atop the pilaster strip on the right.

Additionally, there are later 1.8-meter high short restraining walls that adjoin the rear at right angles between the bays. The short altered section at the right end of the wall is not considered of special interest.
