Description
The clock tower, built in 1846 by W.L. Moffatt from Doncaster, is located approximately 5 meters south-west of the Old Town Hall in Middlesbrough Market Place. This Italianate structure is made of brick with stone dressings, though it is now rendered, and features a metal roof. The tower is designed in four stages, with the lowest stage hidden by a mid-20th century clinic.
Distinctive architectural elements include moulded cornices separating the stages and clasping pilaster strips, with the pilasters on the second and third stages featuring vermiculate rustication. The second stage has blind round-headed windows adorned with moulded imposts and keyed archivolts. The third stage contains blocked round-headed windows, painted to resemble sashes, and is also detailed with pilasters, keyed archivolts, and impost strings. The top stage displays clock faces and volutes at the corners, while shallow-gabled dormers with ball-and-spike finials house latticed bell openings. The tower is topped with a trumpet-shaped roof that features a weather vane and a compass finial. The one-storey clinic is not of special interest but is included for group value.
