Description

MIDDLESBROUGH FERRY ROAD. NZ 42 SE (4921) 1/34 Piers, railings and gates at entrance to Transporter Bridge. G.V. II. Piers, gatepiers, railings and gates, at entrance to Tees Transporter Bridge (q.v.), 1910 by G.C. Imbault (Cleveland Bridge and Engineering Co., Ltd), engineer; constructed by Hill and Smith (Brierley Hill, Staffs). Rockfaced granite piers; iron railings, gatepiers and lamp brackets. 2 granite piers, flanking entrance to bridge, each with large polished granite tablet with inscribed recessed panel recording foundation of bridge in 1910. On each pier, a short colonnette, with moulded and chamfered base, supporting fluted stem and 2 scrolled lamp brackets; Middlesbrough Corporation arms fixed to colonette; lamps now missing. Flanking the piers are spike-topped railings and gates, and slender square gatepiers and intermediate piers, with crown and ball-on-stem finials. Gates have scrolled side bars. Similar railings and piers run at right-angles to those at entrance, from river side along west side of road for c.35m, terminating in similar gate. Included for group value.
