Description
The piers, railings, and gates at the entrance to the Transporter Bridge in Middlesbrough were built in 1910 by G.C. Imbault from Cleveland Bridge and Engineering Co., Ltd., with construction by Hill and Smith of Brierley Hill, Staffordshire. The entrance features rockfaced granite piers, iron railings, gatepiers, and lamp brackets. There are two granite piers flanking the entrance, each adorned with a large polished granite tablet that has an inscribed recessed panel commemorating the foundation of the bridge in 1910. Each pier has a short colonnette with a moulded and chamfered base, supporting a fluted stem and two scrolled lamp brackets, although the lamps are now missing. The Middlesbrough Corporation arms are affixed to the colonette. The piers are flanked by spike-topped railings and gates, along with slender square gatepiers and intermediate piers that feature crown and ball-on-stem finials. The gates have scrolled side bars. Additionally, similar railings and piers extend at right angles from the entrance along the west side of the road for approximately 35 meters, ending in another similar gate. This structure is included for its group value.
