Description

Winch House, along with its adjoining railings, wall, gates, and gatepiers, is located approximately 40 meters southwest of the Transporter Bridge in Middlesbrough. This structure was built in 1911 by engineer G.C. Imbault from Cleveland Bridge and Engineering Co. Ltd., with construction by Sir William Arroll & Co. Ltd. The railings, gates, and gatepiers were created by Hill and Smith from Brierley Hill, Staffordshire.

The building features red engineering brick and a Welsh slate roof, with iron railings, gates, gatepiers, and a glazed brick boundary wall. The Winch House is a single-storey structure with two windows and a boarded door located under a concrete lintel at the right end. It has 16-light windows, each with a single casement pane at the top left and right. The windows have concrete lintels and sills, and there is a brick stack at the left corner. The right side of the building has large boarded double doors, while the rear has two similar windows.

To the left, there are spike-topped railings and two-leaf gates with slender square gatepiers topped with crown and ball-on-stem finials. To the right, there are similar railings, a short boundary wall, and two one-leaf gates with matching gatepiers. A further section of railings connects to the corner of the bridge keeper's house.

Inside the Winch House, there is a winch drum that measures 76 centimeters in diameter and 244 centimeters in length, powered by two 30-horsepower series wound direct current electric motors, which are supplied by renewed semiconductor rectifiers. The winch operates two endless cables that drive the moving carriage on the Transporter Bridge. This structure is included for its group value.
