Description
The Western Cruck Barn at Tomhill Farm, located approximately 5 metres to the west of the house, is a barn that likely dates back to the 17th century. It features a cruck frame made of sandstone rubble, with some gritstone quoins. Originally, it had a stone slate roof, which has since been removed. The barn consists of three bays, with a central threshing floor, and has cowhouse outshuts on either side of a large central doorway. The left outshut serves as an aisle, while the right is separated by a stone wall.
Inside, there are four pairs of crucks, with the pairs at each end embedded in the wall. The crucks are roughly formed and likely made from halved trunks. The barn has a single purlin diagonal-set ridge and includes some windbraces. Wall tie beams are present in three trusses, and the apex details vary. Mortices in the wall plate and one end tie beam suggest that there was earlier timber infill. There are also pegged sockets for har-hung doors, although the west side only retains a small boarded hatch within a walled-up cart entrance.
