Description
The gate piers, gates, and link wall located approximately 10 metres to the west of the front porch of Birley House date from the late 18th century. They are constructed from sandstone ashlar for the piers, with wrought iron gates and brick walling. There is a pair of gate piers, each featuring an iron gate, which are connected to the house by a coped brick wall. The piers have a moulded plinth and are made of monolithic rusticated square stone, topped with moulded bands and a cornice. The gates have closely spaced lower bars connected by both curved and straight rails, a similarly down-curved top rail, decorative finials, and scrolled stiles. This structure is listed mainly for its group value.
