Description
Birley Old Hall is a house dated 1705, which incorporates an earlier cruck building. It underwent alterations in the late 18th century and had mid-19th century additions. The building was restored in 1959 by D Doncaster. It is constructed of coursed squared stone and features gabled and hipped stone slate roofs with a single ridge and two gable stacks, all of which are coped.
The exterior includes rusticated quoins and lintel bands on each floor, with coped gables that have kneelers. The house is two storeys high and has a four-window range in an L-plan layout. The south front displays a coped datestone with the inscriptions "J C 1705" and "D D 1959" above an off-centre door, which is flanked by single 12-pane sash windows. To the left of the door is a 15-pane fixed light, and to the right is a mid-18th century casement with an unusual pattern of glazing bars. The entrance features a moulded stone doorcase with scroll brackets supporting the cornice and a 19th century half-glazed door. On either side of the door, there is a 9-pane sash window, and to the left, there is a half-glazed door with a chamfered surround. To the right, there is a 2-light glazing bar casement similar to the earlier casement. The right gable is blank.
To the left of the main structure, there is a two-storey wing with two 18th century flush mullioned 2-light windows on each floor, with the upper windows being larger. Adjacent to this is a 19th century two-storey addition featuring two 9-pane sashes, an off-centre stable door, and a slatted casement below.
The rear elevation includes, on the left, a flush mullioned 2-light window flanked by two chamfered mullioned windows on the left and a similar window on the right. Below, at ground level, there is a flush mullioned window with a glazing bar casement to its left. The flush cross-wing to the right has an exposed bay post and a 19th century 3-light casement. The interior has not been inspected.
