Description
The building comprises a school, now a Reading Room, and an attached former Master's House, dating from the early 19th century, constructed in two phases. It is built of coursed squared stone, with an artificial slate roof to the school and stone slates to the Master’s House.
The school is a single-storey, five-bay structure. Raised quoins and a plinth are visible. The round-arched window and door openings have imposts and keystones to their plain stone surrounds, with projecting sills. A gabled porch stands centrally, featuring a board door, kneelers, and coping. The roof is hipped with a central ridge louvre. Modern windows have been inserted.
The Master’s House is a two-storey, one-bay projection to the left. A 20th-century door, set within a surround similar to the school’s, is on the right-hand side, while wide, 20th-century windows with projecting sills are placed on each floor to the left. The house has a hipped roof with two brick stacks. The rear elevation of the Master’s House features a window retaining a fanlight with glazing bars in the head.
The rear of the school shows quoins and three windows with plain stone surrounds. A plaque above the school door reads “Building 1737”, although the building's architectural style is consistent with early 19th-century construction.
