Description

The George Woofindin Almshouses, built in 1899 and funded by George Woofindin, consist of 18 almshouses. They are constructed from red brick with moulded brick and ashlar dressings, topped with plain tile roofs. The design features three blocks set at an obtuse angle, connected by gabled archways. The buildings are two storeys high and have a total of 19 bays arranged in a pattern of 6:7:6.

Most of the windows are cross casements with stone mullions and transoms. The central block includes a prominent gable with a central panel that has an inscription and datestone. Below this, there is a round-arched doorway with glazed double doors and a label mould, along with a three-light overlight featuring mullions. On either side of the doorway, there are tall three-light windows. Each side of the central block has three gabled through-eaves dormers, each containing three-light windows.

Additionally, there is a canted and hipped double bay window with three lights, flanked on the inner side by a round-arched doorway with a hoodmould and on the outer side by two similar doorways. There is also a single canted bay window further along. At each end of the central block, there are round-arched doorways beneath steep pitched coped gables topped with ball finials. The flanking blocks each feature six through-eaves dormers with three-light windows, along with two doorways flanked by double bay windows, followed by double doorways and single bay windows. The interior has not been inspected.
