Description

Barn. Probably dating from the 17th century, the barn stands approximately 15 metres to the east of Briers House Farm. Constructed of irregularly coursed rubble sandstone with a stone slate roof, the barn is set into a slope and comprises four bays. A cart entrance is situated to the right of the centre, and a cowhouse is located at the downhill end, beneath the hayloft. A cowhouse door is present at the left end, with two further square openings. Additional openings are visible in the left return wall.

Inside, the barn features four roughly formed and poorly curved cruck pairs. The uphill pair is built into the end wall, while the downhill end cruck extends into the cowhouse bay. The structure includes wall ties and a collar beneath the apex. Single purlins and some windbraces are also present. The cruck ends abut a diagonally-set ridge. The barn is generally in poor condition, with one cruck blade sawn off and supported on a high stone column, and another supported by a brick column below a tie beam. The roof of the uphill bay has completely collapsed.
