Description
The stable block, located approximately 40 metres to the northeast of Ravenfield Hall Farmhouse, dates from the mid to late 18th century and was designed by John Carr for the Ravenfield Hall estate. It is constructed of horizontally-tooled sandstone with a Welsh slate roof and features two storeys with a layout of three bays across the front.
The building has a plinth, large quoins, and a continuous impost band at the ground floor. The central bays project forward and contain a round-arched carriage entrance with an archivolt, flanked by later casements set in original round-headed ashlar surrounds, also with archivolts. The outer bays have similar windows, with those in bays two and eight set within recessed panels beneath matching archivolts. The window in bay three has been converted into a door, and there is an external brick stack positioned between bays one and two, which is not of special interest.
On the first floor, there are unequally-hung 12-pane sash windows in square-faced surrounds with projecting sills. The eaves cornice is modillioned and rises into a central three-bay pediment, which is adorned with banded ball finials to its left and at the apex. The roof is hipped. At the rear, there are external steps leading to loft doors on both the left and right sides, and a first-floor band beneath seven oculi, along with a plain cornice. The interior has not been inspected, but there are architraved doors on each side within the archway.
