Description

The Harthill War Memorial is a structure dedicated to commemorating the fallen soldiers of the First and Second World Wars. It was built in 1920 based on designs by John Douglas Webster, with sculpture work by Frank Tory and Sons.

The memorial features a Portland stone cross set on a high, octagonal pedestal, which is raised on three octagonal steps. The cross is adorned with a floriated design and includes two upper relief-carved floriate bands, as well as a deep base band of relief-carved tracery. The pedestal also has relief-carved tracery and a moulded cap and plinth.

The memorial is located in front of the high rectory wall on the east side of Union Street, which runs north-south through the village. It stands within a square, flagged enclosure that has a shaped stone kerb on three sides, topped with low cast-iron railings and a gate on the right-hand side. The fourth side is formed by the rectory wall at the back.

On the wall beneath a stone hoodmould, there are two stone plaques with incised inscriptions set in stone frames. The upper plaque is dedicated "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN HONOURED MEMORY / OF THE HARTHILL MEN / WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN / THE GREAT WAR 1914-19 / THIS CROSS WAS DEDICATED / BY THEIR FELLOW PARISHIONERS," listing ranks, initials, surnames, and regiments, followed by "R.I.P." The smaller, lower plaque commemorates the years 1939-1945, listing initials and surnames.
