Description

Harthill Schoolhouse is a church schoolhouse that was rebuilt in 1721 for the 2nd Reverend John Hewitt. It has undergone later alterations and additions. The building is constructed of ashlar sandstone and features a Welsh slate roof. It is a single-storey structure with three bays, where the taller central bay projects forward. The building has a plinth with projecting quoins.

The central doorway is blocked and features an unequally-hung 20-pane sash window set in a raised ashlar surround with moulded arrises and a slight cornice above, which has a rusticated panel. On either side of the doorway are renewed casements with tall ashlar surrounds and projecting sills. The outer bays contain cross windows in similar surrounds. The central pediment has kneelers connected by a band, an architraved oculus, and gable copings. The roof is hipped with stone ridges.

At the rear, there is a lean-to beneath the central gable, which lacks an oculus. On the right return, there is a doorway with an ashlar surround and a slight cornice, along with a shuttered casement to its left. A 20th-century lean-to addition on the left return is not of special interest. The foundation stone was laid on 7th June 1721, and some building accounts are noted in parish records. The schoolhouse is located in the corner of the churchyard of the Church of All Hallows.
