Description
The enclosure wall to the north of Ravenfield Hall Farmhouse, with attached farm buildings at the south end of the east side, is a roadside and farmyard enclosure wall dating from the mid to late 18th century and early 19th century, built for the Ravenfield Hall estate. The wall is constructed of coursed, dressed sandstone and brick, while the farm buildings have been re-roofed with 20th-century cement tiles.
The trapezoidal enclosure wall runs along the roadside to the west and connects the entrance gateway and attached railings to the barn at Ravenfield Hall, with the southern side linking to the stables. The east side features a 1-storey range that includes a 2-bay carriage house at the south end and cowhouses with 5 and 6 bays to the right.
The roadside wall stands 3 to 4 metres high with plain copings and incorporates the rear wall of a farm cottage. The wall curves back from the road in a convex shape. The southern section is faced with brick and has an ashlar door surround on the right. The attached carriage house, dating from the early 19th century, features an impost band above two segmental arches and an eaves band beneath a hipped roof. The cowhouse to the right has a central door linked by an impost band to flanking round-headed windows, and it also has an eaves band beneath a separate hipped roof. The cowhouse set back on the right is in a similar style but has been altered. The interior of the enclosure was not inspected during the resurvey, but aerial photographs indicate that the enclosure is subdivided, with buildings in its northern part.
