Description
St Mary's Rectory is an unoccupied rectory built in 1752, with alterations made in 1797 and 1820, along with later 19th-century modifications. It was constructed for Christopher Stephenson, the Rector, possibly designed by James Paine. The building features coursed, dressed sandstone and a Welsh slate roof. The entrance front has three bays and is gabled, with an added porch and a late 19th-century wing set back to the left. The structure is two storeys high with a partial attic.
The central bay projects forward and has a plinth. The single-storey porch features panelled double doors set in a Tudor-arched opening, flanked by part-ribbed Doric columns. Above the porch is a cornice with a Latin inscription beneath a panel that includes a cross. The gable is coped and topped with a fleur-de-lys finial. The flanking bays have a ground floor sill band; the first bay has a boarded window, while the third bay has a blind window. The central first-floor Venetian window is boarded and set in a round-arched recess. The central bay also has a small attic sash beneath a pediment, and the outer bays feature half-pediments, although the raking cornices are missing. There is a corniced stack to the right of the central bay.
The late 19th-century wing to the left has a projecting lateral stack, and an extruded corner at the angle with the main range includes sashes. The right return has an early 19th-century stuccoed, curved bay with two windows on the ground floor, a band at the first floor, and four sashes above. To the right, there are two sashes with glazing bars on each floor. All ground-floor windows are boarded. The interior has been extensively vandalised at the time of the resurvey.
