Description
Ryton Aqueduct, located approximately 80 metres east of the bridge at Cinder Hill, is an aqueduct partly in Nottinghamshire, constructed around 1777 and partly reconstructed in 1946. It was built for the Chesterfield Canal Company, with engineering by James Brindley. The structure is made of squared rubble limestone, with the south side rebuilt in blue brick. It features a treble-span bridge that carries the River Ryton beneath the canal.
On the north side, there are three segmental arches with chamfered ashlar voussoirs, interspersed with unchamfered keyed voussoirs and projecting keystones. Above this, coursed rubblework is reinforced by three concrete bands, and the parapet has hammer-dressed, rounded copings. A plaque on the north wall of the aqueduct is inscribed with 'CONSTRUCTED/1772-7/RECONSTRUCTED/1946'. This aqueduct is an important relic of the Chesterfield Canal, which was built between 1771 and 1777 under the supervision of John Varley and Hugh Henshall.
